Dr. Nurit Peled-Elhanan is the mother of Smadar Elhanan, 13 years old when killed by a suicide bomber in Jerusalem in September 1997. Below is Nurit's speech made on International Women's Day in Strasbourg earlier this month. Please listen to the words of a bereaved mother,whose daughter fell victim to a vicious, indiscriminating terrorist attack.

The speech:

Thank you for inviting me to this today. It is always an honour and a pleasure to be here, among you (at the European Parliament). However, I must admit I believe you should have invited a Palestinian woman in my stead, because the women who suffer most from violence in my county are the Palestinian women. And I would like to dedicate my speech to Miriam R`aban and her husband Kamal, from Bet Lahiya in the Gaza strip, whose five small children were killed by

Israeli soldiers while picking strawberries at the family`s strawberry field. No one will ever stand trial for this murder. When I asked the people who invited me here why didn't they invite a Palestinian woman, the answer was that it would make the discussion too localized.

I don't know what is non-localized violence. Racism and discrimination may be theoretical concepts and universal phenomena but their impact is always local, and real. Pain is local, humiliation, sexual abuse, torture and death, are all very local, and so are the scars. It is true, unfortunately, that the local violence inflicted on Palestinian women by the government of Israel and the Israeli army, has expanded around the globe, In fact, state violence and army violence, individual and collective violence, are the lot of Muslim womenUSA. This is because the so-called free world is afraid of the Muslim womb.

Great France of "la liberte egalite et la fraternite" is scared of little girls with head scarves. Great Jewish Israel is afraid of the Muslim womb which its ministers call a demographic threat. Almighty America and Great Britain are infecting their respective citizens with blind fear of the Muslims, who are depicted as vile, primitive and blood-thirsty, apart from their being non-democratic, chauvinistic and mass producers of future terrorists. This in spite of the fact that the people who are destroying the world today are not Muslim. One of them is a devout Christian, one is Anglican and one is a non-devout Jew.

I have never experienced the suffering Palestinian women undergo every day, every hour, I don't know the kind of violence that turns a woman's life into constant hell. This daily physical and mental torture of women who are deprived of their basic human rights and needs of privacy and dignity, women whose homes are broken into at any moment of day and night, who are ordered at a gun-point to strip naked in front of strangers and their own children, whose houses are demolished, who are deprived of their livelihood and of any normal family life. This is not part of my personal ordeal.

But I am a victim of violence against women insofar as violence against children is actually violence against mothers. Palestinian, Iraqi, Afghan women are my sisters because we are all at the grip of the same unscrupulous criminals who call themselves leaders of the free enlightened world and in the name of this freedom and enlightenment rob us of our children. Furthermore, Israeli, American, Italian and British mothers have been for the most part violently blinded and brainwashed to such a degree that they cannot realize their only sisters, their only allies in the world are the Muslim Palestinian, Iraqi or Afghani mothers, whose children are killed by our children or who blow themselves to pieces with our sons and daughters. They are all mind-infected by the same viruses engendered by politicians. And the viruses , though they may have various illustrious names-such as Democracy, Patriotism, God, Homeland-are all the same. They are all part of false and fake ideologies that are meant to enrich the rich and to empower the powerful.

We are all the victims of mental, psychological and cultural violence that turn us to one homogenic group of bereaved or potentially bereaved mothers. Western mothers who are taught to believe their uterus is a national asset just like they are taught to believe that the Muslim uterus is an international threat. They are educated not to cry out: 'I gave him birth, I breast fed him, he is mine, and I will not let him be the one whose life is cheaper than oil, whose future is less worth than a piece of land.' All of us are terrorized by mind-infecting education to believe all we can do is either pray for our sons to come back home or be proud of their dead bodies. And all of us were brought up to bear all this silently, to contain our fear and frustration, to take Prozac for anxiety, but never hail Mama Courage in public. Never be real Jewish or Italian or Irish mothers.

I am a victim of state violence. My natural and civil rights as a mother have been violated and are violated because I have to fear the day my son would reach his 18th birthday and be taken away from me to be the game tool of criminals such as Sharon, Bush, Blair and their clan of blood-thirsty, oil-thirsty, land thirsty generals. Living in the world I live in, in the state I live in, in the regime I live in, I don't dare to offer Muslim women any ideas how to change their lives. I don't want them to take off their scarves, or educate their children differently, and I will not urge them to constitute Democracies in the image of Western democracies that despise them and their kind. I just want to ask them humbly to be my sisters, to express my admiration for their perseverance and for their courage to carry on, to have children and to maintain a dignified family life in spite of the impossible conditions my world is putting them in. I want to tell them we are all bonded by the same pain, we are all the victims of the same sort of violence even though they suffer much more, for they are the ones who are mistreated by my government and its army, sponsored by my taxes.

Islam in itself, like Judaism in itself and Christianity in itself, is not a threat to me or to anyone. American imperialism is, European indifference and co-operation is and Israeli racism and its cruel regime of occupation is. It is racism, educational propaganda and inculcated xenophobia that convince Israeli soldiers to order Palestinian women at gun-point, to strip in front of their children for security reasons, it is the deepest disrespect for the other that allow American soldiers to rape Iraqi women, that give license to Israeli jailers to keep young women in inhuman conditions, without necessary hygienic aids, without electricity in the winter, without clean water or clean mattresses and to separate them from their breast-fed babies and toddlers. To bar their way to hospitals, to block their way to education, to confiscate their lands, to uproot their trees and prevent them from cultivating their fields.

I cannot completely understand Palestinian women or their suffering. I don't know how I would have survived such humiliation, such disrespect from the whole world. All I know is that the voice of mothers has been suffocated for too long in this war-stricken planet. Mothers' cry is not heard because mothers are not invited to international forums such as this one. This I know and it is very little. But it is enough for me to remember these women are my sisters, and that they deserve that I should cry for them, and fight for them. And when they lose their children in strawberry fields or on filthy roads by the checkpoints, when their children are shot on their way to school by Israeli children who were educated to believe that love and compassion are race and religion dependent, the only thing I can do is stand by them and their betrayed babies, and ask what Anna Akhmatova - another mother who lived in a regime of violence against women and children - asked: Why does that streak of blood, rip the petal of your cheek?!

Young British Women converting to Islam

Thousands of young British women living in the UK decide to convert to Islam - here are some of their stories. It’s a controversial time for British women to be wearing the hijab, the basic Muslim headscarf. Last month, Belgium became the first European country to pass legislation to ban the burka (the most concealing of Islamic veils), calling it a “threat” to female dignity, while France looks poised to follow suit. In Italy earlier this month, a Muslim woman was fined €500 (£430) for wearing the Islamic veil outside a post office.

And yet, while less than 2 per cent of the population now attends a Church of England service every week, the number of female converts to Islam is on the rise. At the London Central Mosque in Regent’s Park, women account for roughly two thirds of the “New Muslims” who make their official declarations of faith there – and most of them are under the age of 30.

Conversion statistics are frustratingly patchy, but at the time of the 2001 Census, there were at least 30,000 British Muslim converts in the UK. According to Kevin Brice, of the Centre for Migration Policy Research, Swansea University, this number may now be closer to 50,000 – and the majority are women. “Basic analysis shows that increasing numbers of young, university-educated women in their twenties and thirties are converting to Islam,” confirms Brice.

“As a teenager I thought all religion was pathetic. I used to spend every weekend getting drunk outside the leisure centre, in high-heeled sandals and miniskirts. My view was: what’s the point in putting restrictions on yourself? You only live once.

“At university, I lived the typical student existence, drinking and going clubbing, but I’d always wake up the next morning with a hangover and think, what’s the point?

“It wasn’t until my second year that I met Hussein. I knew he was a Muslim, but we were falling in love, so I brushed the whole issue of religion under the carpet. But six months into our relationship, he told me that being with me was ‘against his faith’.

“I was so confused. That night I sat up all night reading two books on Islam that Hussein had given me. I remember bursting into tears because I was so overwhelmed. I thought, ‘This could be the whole meaning of life.’ But I had a lot of questions: why should I cover my head? Why can’t I eat what I like?

“I started talking to Muslim women at university and they completely changed my view. They were educated, successful – and actually found the headscarf liberating. I was convinced, and three weeks later officially converted to Islam.

“When I told my mum a few weeks later, I don’t think she took it seriously. She made a few comments like, ‘Why would you wear that scarf? You’ve got lovely hair,’ but she didn’t seem to understand what it meant.

“My best friend at university completely turned on me: she couldn’t understand how one week I was out clubbing, and the next I’d given everything up and converted to Islam. She was too close to my old life, so I don’t regret losing her as a friend.

“I chose the name Aqeela because it means ‘sensible and intelligent’ – and that’s what I was aspiring to become when I converted to Islam six years ago. I became a whole new person: everything to do with Lindsay, I’ve erased from my memory.

“The most difficult thing was changing the way I dressed, because I was always so fashion-conscious. The first time I tried on the hijab, I remember sitting in front of the mirror, thinking, ‘What am I doing putting a piece of cloth over my head? I look crazy!’ Now I’d feel naked without it and only occasionally daydream about feeling the wind blow through my hair. Once or twice, I’ve come home and burst into tears because of how frumpy I feel – but that’s just vanity.

“It’s a relief not to feel that pressure any more. Wearing the hijab reminds me that all I need to do is serve God and be humble. I’ve even gone through phases of wearing the niqab because I felt it was more appropriate – but it can cause problems, too.

“When people see a white girl wearing a niqab they assume I’ve stuck my fingers up at my own culture to ‘follow a bunch of Asians’. I’ve even had teenage boys shout at me in the street, ‘Get that s*** off your head, you white bastard.’ After the London bombings, I was scared to walk about in the streets for fear of retaliation.

“For the most part, I have a very happy life. I married Hussein and now we have a one-year-old son, Zakir. We try to follow the traditional Muslim roles: I’m foremost a housewife and mother, while he goes out to work. I used to dream of having a successful career as a psychologist, but now it’s not something I desire.

“Becoming a Muslim certainly wasn’t an easy way out. This life can sometimes feel like a prison, with so many rules and restrictions, but we believe that we will be rewarded in the afterlife.”

“Before I found Islam, my gaze was firmly fixed on Africa. I was raised a Rastafarian and used to have crazy-long dreadlocks: one half blonde and the other half black.

“Then, in 2005, my ex-boyfriend came back from a trip to Africa and announced that he’d converted to Islam. I was furious and told him he was ‘losing his African roots’. Why was he trying to be an Arab? It was so foreign to how I lived my life. Every time I saw a Muslim woman in the street I thought, ‘Why do they have to cover up like that? Aren’t they hot?’ It looked oppressive to me.

“Islam was already in my consciousness, but when I started reading the autobiography of Malcolm X at university, something opened up inside me. One day I said to my best friend, Muneera, ‘I’m falling in love with Islam.’ She laughed and said, ‘Be quiet, Sukina!’ She only started exploring Islam to prove me wrong, but soon enough she started believing it, too.

“I was always passionate about women’s rights; there was no way I would have entered a religion that sought to degrade me. So when I came across a book by a Moroccan feminist, it unravelled all my negative opinions: Islam didn’t oppress women; people did.

“Before I converted, I conducted an experiment. I covered up in a long gypsy skirt and headscarf and went out. But I didn’t feel frumpy; I felt beautiful. I realised, I’m not a sexual commodity for men to lust after; I want to be judged for what I contribute mentally.

“Muneera and I took our shahada together a few months later, and I cut my dreadlocks off to represent renewal: it was the beginning of a new life.

“Just three weeks after our conversion, the 7/7 bombings happened; suddenly we were public enemy No 1. I’d never experienced racism in London before, but in the weeks after the bombs, people would throw eggs at me and say, ‘Go back to your own country,’ even though this was my country.

“I’m not trying to shy away from any aspect of who I am. Some people dress in Arabian or Pakistani styles, but I’m British and Caribbean, so my national dress is Primark and Topshop, layered with colourful charity-shop scarves.

“Six months after I converted, I got back together with my ex-boyfriend, and now we’re married. Our roles in the home are different, because we are different people, but he would never try to order me around; that’s not how I was raised.

“Before I found Islam, I was a rebel without a cause, but now I have a purpose in life: I can identify my flaws and work towards becoming a better person. To me, being a Muslim means contributing to your society, no matter where you come from.”

“My parents always thought I was abnormal, even before I became a Muslim. In my early teens, they’d find me watching TV on a Friday night and say, ‘What are you doing at home? Haven’t you got any friends to go out with?’

“The truth was: I didn’t like alcohol, I’ve never tried smoking and I wasn’t interested in boys. You’d think they’d have been pleased.

“I’ve always been quite a spiritual person, so when I started studying Islam in my first year of GCSEs, something just clicked. I would spend every lunchtime reading about Islam on the computer. I had peace in my heart and nothing else mattered any more. It was a weird experience – I’d found myself, but the person I found wasn’t like anyone else I knew.

“I’d hardly ever seen a Muslim before, so I didn’t have any preconceptions, but my parents weren’t so open-minded. I hid all my Muslim books and headscarves in a drawer, because I was so scared they’d find out.

“When I told my parents, they were horrified and said, ‘We’ll talk about it when you’re 18.’ But my passion for Islam just grew stronger. I started dressing more modestly and would secretly fast during Ramadan. I got very good at leading a double life until one day, when I was 17, I couldn’t wait any longer.

“I sneaked out of the house, put my hijab in a carrier bag and got on the train to Bournemouth. I must have looked completely crazy putting it on in the train carriage, using a wastebin lid as a mirror. When a couple of old people gave me dirty looks, I didn’t care. For the first time in my life, I felt like myself.

“A week after my conversion, my mum came marching into my room and said, ‘Have you got something to tell me?’ She pulled my certificate of conversion out of her pocket. I think they’d rather have found anything else at that point – drugs, cigarettes, condoms – because at least they could have put it down to teenage rebellion.

“I could see the fear in her eyes. She couldn’t comprehend why I’d want to give up my freedom for the sake of a foreign religion. Why would I want to join all those terrorists and suicide bombers?

“It was hard being a Muslim in my parents’ house. I’ll never forget one evening, there were two women in burkas on the front page of the newspaper, and they started joking, ‘That’ll be Catherine soon.’

“They didn’t like me praying five times a day either; they thought it was ‘obsessive’. I’d pray right in front of my bedroom door so my mum couldn’t walk in, but she would always call upstairs, ‘Catherine, do you want a cup of tea?’ just so I’d have to stop.

“Four years on, my grandad still says things like, ‘Muslim women have to walk three steps behind their husbands.’ It gets me really angry, because that’s the culture, not the religion. My fiancé, whom I met eight months ago, is from Afghanistan and he believes that a Muslim woman is a pearl and her husband is the shell that protects her. I value that old-fashioned way of life: I’m glad that when we get married he’ll take care of paying the bills. I always wanted to be a housewife anyway.

“Marrying an Afghan man was the cherry on the cake for my parents. They think I’m completely crazy now. He’s an accountant and actually speaks better English than I do, but they don’t care. The wedding will be in a mosque, so I don’t think they’ll come. It hurts to think I’ll never have that fairytale wedding, surrounded by my family. But I hope my new life with my husband will be a lot happier. I’ll create the home I’ve always wanted, without having to feel the pain of people judging me.”

We are all Gaza!

In May 2010, Six ships consisting of more than 600 activists from 37countries and carrying 10 000 tons of humanitarian aid were headed to Gaza. The Freedom Flotilla set sail to Gaza in hope of breaking through the Gaza blockade and delivering the humanitarian supplies to the people of Gaza. However on 31May, Israel raided and attacked the Freedom Flotilla in International waters of the Meditarranean sea, where they siezed the supply and shot 10 activists and wounded atleast 60 activists.

International reaction has varied from strong criticism of Israel, to deep regret for the loss of life and requests for inquiries, with the United Nations Security Council condemning "those acts which resulted in the loss of at least 10 civilians and many wounded", and calling for "a prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation conforming to international standards"

Though the Freedom Flotilla did not reach Gaza, they have achieved their goal in bringing the World's attention to the Palestinian people of Gaza and the 3year Gaza Blockade!

The Gaza Blockade has affected everything from sanitation to schools, agriculture to healthcare. Unemployment has soared and blackouts have become common. UN statistics show that around 70% of Gazans live on less than $1 a day, 75% rely on food aid and 60% have no daily access to water. Humanitarian aid is in theory allowed in, but UN agencies and charities claim that the Israelis have banned any items that are humanitarian in nature but could be put to alternative use. Items said to face delays getting into Gaza include shelter kits, health and paediatric hygiene kits, bedding, kitchen utensils, school textbooks and stationery.

Isreal openly commits an International Crime of Apartheid against the Palestinian people. Imagine someone coming to your land, taking your home, taking your property, raping your daughters, sisters, and oppressing you and claiming that you don't belong there and the land was theirs. These are only some of the atrocities Israel commits against Palestine.

Today and everyday, Pray for the people of Gaza, our brothers and sisters, and the rest of the Ummah. Boycott Israel products and spread the word of the suffering and plight of the Palestinian people. May Allah make it easy for us!

On July 1, 2009 Marwa Al-Sherbeini (a muslim pharmacist living in germany wearing the head scarf) was killed during a hearing at a court of law in Dresden, Germany. She was stabbed 18 times by a man against whom she had testified in a criminal case for verbal abuse about wearing an Islamic headscarf.Other noteworthy characteristics of this murder were that the perpetrator was motivated by hostility and prejudice against a race and religion; the criminal offence was committed in front of a child, while also attacking another person who tried to intervene.

We want to honor all Muslim women who are wearing the headscarf (the Hijab) on this day , to announce to all the world that what is happening to the Muslim women in the west is not fair , and doesn't match with the freedom foundations that the western societies was built on .

We want equal treatment to Muslim women who are wearing Hijab , just like other women who don't .

Women protest as French Cabinet gets veil ban bill

PARIS – One runs her own company, another is a housewife and a third, a divorcee, raises her children by herself. Like nearly 2,000 other Muslim women who freely wear face-covering veils anywhere in France, their lives will soon change and they are worried.

On Wednesday, French Justice Minister Michele Alliot-Marie presented a draft law to the Cabinet banning Muslim veils that cover the face, the first formal step in a process to forbid such attire in all public places in France. It calls for euro150 ($185) fines and, in some cases, citizenship classes for women who run afoul of the law.

The measure notably creates a new offense, "inciting to hide the face," and anyone convicted of forcing a woman to wear such a veil risks a year in prison and a euro15,000 ($18,555) fine, according to a copy of the text.

"Citizenship should be experienced with an uncovered face," President Nicolas Sarkozy told the Cabinet meeting, in remarks released by his office. "There can be no other solution but a ban in all public places."

Although the Interior Ministry estimates there are only 1,900 women in France who cover their faces with veils, the planned law would be another defining moment for Islam here as the nation tries to bring its Muslim population — at least 5 million, the largest in western Europe — into the mainstream, even by force of law.

The bill is to go before parliament in July, and despite the acrimonious debate that is sure to come, there is little doubt the measure will become law. Sarkozy, who says such veils oppress women, wants a law banning them on the books as soon as possible.

"If the law is voted, I won't take off my veil. ... No one will dictate my way of life" but God, said Najat, a divorcee, who gave her age as "45 plus." She was one of a half-dozen women who, in a rare move, met with reporters on Tuesday to express their worries about changes they say will impact their lives to the core.

Like others, she refused to give her full name. All said they fear for their safety in an increasingly tense climate. Najat was among those who said she has been increasingly harassed since debate over the planned law began nearly a year ago.

Amnesty International urged French lawmakers to reject the bill. The London-based organization said its expert on discrimination in Europe, John Dalhuisen, believes a complete ban would violate rights to freedom of expression and religion for women who wear the face veils "as an expression of their identity or beliefs."

A French anti-racism group, MRAP, which opposes such dress, said a law would be "useless and dangerous."

Sarkozy welcomed the bill, saying the government is embarking on "a just path" and urging parliament to take its "moral responsibility" and approve it.

The final draft text says France's founding tenets of liberty, equality and fraternity, values that guarantee the "social pact," are at stake.

The women beg to differ, claiming that France is betraying itself.

"Liberty. Liberty. I'm in France, in the land of liberty, equality, fraternity. I had the impression I was living it," said Oum Al Khyr, of Montreuil, on the edge of eastern Paris.

The measure, which could be amended once it reaches parliament, foresees a six-month delay in its application to explain the law and mediate with recalcitrant women who cover their faces, which means it wouldn't take effect until early in 2011.

A similar veil ban is in the works in neighboring Belgium.

France has already walked this road, banning Muslim headscarves, and other "ostentatious" religious symbols, from classrooms in 2004.

The bespectacled Najat, with a French mother and Moroccan father, said she has covered her face with a veil for 10 years. Najat said that because she is divorced and raising her children alone no one "can say this is imposed on me."

"I won't leave" France if the veil is outlawed. "Why should I leave?" Najat said, waving her French passport.

The women predicted that their "sisters," other women who veil themselves, would hide out in their homes so as not to get caught breaking the law. Several said they would take their case to the European Court of Human Rights if arrested.

With the law, "They are giving people the right to attack us," said Kenza Drider, of Avignon in the south, who is married with four children. She was the only fully veiled woman to be interviewed by a parliamentary panel during a six-month inquiry.

"To tell a sister you can't wear this veil is to say you can't practice your religion," said Oum Al Khyra.

The bill turns on the "dignity of the person" rather than security issues, as had been widely speculated. It was unclear if that would make it more vulnerable to constitutional attacks.

The French government decided to risk running up against the constitution, despite a warning from the Council of State, France's highest administrative body, which said March 30 that a full ban would likely not pass constitutional muster. It confirmed its "unfavorable opinion" on a general ban in a final report last week, according to the daily Le Figaro.

France's Muslim leaders have said the face-covering veil is not required by Islam, but have also warned that a ban on the full veil risks stigmatizing all Muslims.

In a country where fashion counts, and is often revealing, there is a visceral reaction among some French to veils that cover women from head to toe and conceal the face, sometimes including the eyes.

Critics of the garb say such dress is an affront to gender equality and undermines the nation's secular foundations by bringing religion into the streets. Others say the face-covering veil is the gateway to radical Islam.

The six women speaking Tuesday tackled such arguments, saying that their dignity cannot be dictated by the state, that they do not represent a terrorist threat and that secularism should give them the right to practice their religion as they see fit. They correctly note that women make up less than 20 percent of the 577 lawmakers in the French National Assembly, the lower house of parliament.

"They say they are going to free us," said Drider. But "it's the state who will force us into cloisters. We will have to sue for sequestration."

Karima, 31, who runs an import-export company, said she has been wearing a burqa-like veil for 16 years — more than half her life, she notes — and "I don't even know how to take it off."

While long scarves are common in the UAE and other parts of the world, in Turkey, square scarves are most commonly worn! The Turkish Hijabs are brightly colored and come in beautiful multi-colour prints.

A Satin or Polyester square scarf, folded in to a triangle and then pinned under the chin ,is the basic style of a Turkish Hijab. It is then further draped into various styles.

Young Muslim women on the lookout for clothes that are both Islamic and trendy can look forward to a Hijab Expo due to be held by the An Nur Book Club on Saturday 10 April. The expo takes place from 9am to 6pm at the Taronga Road Masjied Hall in Rondebosch, South Africa with an entry fee of R20. According to organizers, they hope to present inspiring discussions and exhibit art aimed at encouraging young women to don the hijab.

"The ladies only event is aimed to encourage and empower young women who are having issues with donning the Hijab. We have gathered a group of women who are strongly minded in their Hijab and will give insight to the youth about how they started wearing Hijab what their personal interpretation of what the Hijab is and why. The Hijab is not only worn externally, but starts within - the Hijab of the heart," said Roshaan Misbach of the An Nur Book Club and event co-ordinator.

Other attractions include a fashion show, displaying modest wear for the youth as well a scarf styling session. The fashion show is by local Muslim designers to give the youth some idea as to how they can dress modestly and still be somewhat fashionable. Mehndi patterns, health advice and food stalls will be available. The entire day will see to addressing the needs of the mind, body and soul.

Books
The launch of the children's book ‘The Muslim Princess' will be taking place and activities for the younger children by Muslimahs and Tots and Muslimahs and Babies. The author of the book ‘Secrets of a Muslim Heart', Tazmin Mahomed of Durban, will also be present to discuss her book and present an inspiring discussion to the women present.

According to Misbach, the day looks at the different facets of being a Muslim woman and trying to celebrate who she is as a woman. Alexander McQueen: Shoes you've never seen before!

Alexander McQueen's Spring 2010 runway collection was a total statement! Out came the McQueen clothing in gorgeous reptilian prints with sequins and beading to mimic animal like scales!

The super high, skeleton like fantasy heels on the runway were truly out of this world and as for the ankle- boots , they were curved looking , almost like hooves. This collection was at the edge of creativity and is worn only by the animalistc and bold!

Although I personally find the collection too bold and freaky at times especially the shoes, I have to give credit to McQueen for having the talent and the artistic guts to introduce something completely different to the fashion world.

Love them or Loathe them.. Alexander McQueen clothing is a total style statement and although he has died, McQueen's fashion and style legacy continues to live on!

Here's a quick guide on how to take care and store your gorgeous foot candy properly.

1)"Clean your shoes after each wearing”, advises Stephanie Pendersen, author of Shoes – What Every Woman Should Know, (David & Charles 2005) “Not only will you feel great putting on a pair of clean, shiny shoes but smart footwear creates a better impression too.”

2)Use a leather cleaner, it will keep shoes soft and supple looking. Also if your shoes have scratches, use a cream of shade in a lighter color

3) Keep your shoes on a rack, or in original boxes, this will prevent them from getting scratched

4)Do not keep your shoes on the floor, they are more likely to attract dust and dirt.

5)If you want to store shoes in your cupboard, buy a shoe cupboard, or seperate rack. A good buy is the canvas type hanging shelves.

6)Store shoes in tissue paper or bubble paper, if you won't be wearing them for a long time.

7)There is a huge range of storage boxes available intended for storing individual pairs or multiple footwear. However, make sure these bins and boxes allow for air flow, to prevent mould setting in.

8) After wiping your shoes, make sure each pair is fully dried before storing them, else you are asking for trouble.

9) Wear heel protectors, for protecting heels when walking over cobblestones, sidewalks and escalators.

I remember back in the days when I was extremely young, my mom n I went to buy an "ïslamic"swimming costume somewhere in Durban and to my disappointment, it was hideous as ever!
I decided to stick with my 3/4 shorts and long tshirt instead!

Well.. times have changed and it seems that great strides have been taken to deliver swim wear for muslim women!

During my recent visit to Wild Wadi ..(a water theme park in Dubai for those who dunaw).. I came across women wearing gorgeous, modest swim wear, that even covers your hair!
I loved it!

A Lebanese Australian designer, Aheda Zanetti came up with a swim suit for muslim women, calling it Burqini.
The suit covers the whole body except the face, the hands and the feet (enough to preserve Muslim modesty), whilst being light enough to enable swimming. It was described as the perfect solution for Muslim women who want to swim but are uncomfortable about "revealing" bathing suits.
It looks rather like a full-length wetsuit with built-in hood, but somewhat looser and made of swimsuit material instead of rubber.

Hijabifying the Red Carpet 2010

Okay so the Oscars are over and to be honest.. I wasn't so impressed with the gowns.. but roll out the red carpet and let's see what we can and cannot hijabify!

1)Our best Hijab pick was the gown worn by Nicole Richie!

Beautiful pattern and very decent! Only make sure you don't use a stretch knit which will stick to your body!

And offcourse..adding a scarf to the outfit makes this style great for a wedding or some glamouress occassion!!

2) Next best pick is this stunning gown worn by Cameron Diaz and designed by oscar de la Rente

The top of the gown is totally out and will have to be replaced by something longsleeve and more covered..but i absolutely love the bottom of the gown! Very princess like and with right beaded fabric and right color, you will have a gown to die for!

3) And lastly my final pic.. Remember bjork? well love it or hate it.. but i applaud something different and non-conforming! Zoe Saldana dared to deliver this amazing piece by Givenchy!

If you're daring enough.. you can wear the bottom and hijibify the top by adding long sleeves and editing the waist line!

Okay so I love trenchcoats and I think they look fabulous with Hijab.. but one piece of advice.. Don't over do the color! If you're wearing a bright color trench.. go for a mix and match type of scarf that adds flair! Don't go out all in one color.. and end up looking like little red riding hood!!

Also wear florals,, something pretty.. this scarf just doesn't work with this trenchcoat!

Go for something like this..which breaks the red up with another color.

An Emirati designer is changing the face of Arabic fashion by creating abayas based on trousers rather than the traditional dress.

Lamya Abedin, the owner of Queen of Spades, started designing two-and-a-half years ago and has seen the popularity of her "pantaloon abayas" rocket in the past few months as Galeries Lafayette began stocking her designs in its The Dubai Mall store. One newcomer who made a big splash 2009 Jakarta Fashion Week was young designer Dian Pelangi.

At age 18, her cutting-edge Muslim fashions for young women are beginning to attract local and international attention.
Six olive-skinned models hit the runway, sashaying in vibrantly colored tunics and long overcoats over loose-fitting harem pants. Their shiny gold platform shoes and sandals clicked confidently on the catwalk. They appeared both strong and feminine, a far cry from the traditional soft, gentle look that Muslim fashion has favored in the past. Their stylish, yet modest, silhouettes were a clear hit with the cheering audience.

Being fashionable is one thing, but how far do you take it, is another thing! In my business I came across these Alexander Mc Queen designer scarves with their standard logo- The Skull!

As a business women, and above that as a Muslimah, I felt wearing these scarves were sorta out of line... however I came across this picture of a muslimah wearing it!

What do you think? Will u buy a scarf like that? Would u wear it as Hijab? I have to admit.. i dont think it looks too bad on this muslimah! Looks quiet trendy! But lets hear it from u:)

Hijabs du jour and hijab don'ts: Whether the Muslim veil takes the gentle Pakistani drape or the face-hugging Saudi wrap, it is a style statement.

As the trend of wearing hijab spreads, so, too, have hijab fashions. Women from New Jersey to Jakarta are trying new ways of wearing wraps taught on YouTube or showcased on runways. They’re wearing silk print scarves and scarves from The Gap, sheer scarves with sequins and hot-pink frilly scarves, scarves awash with the Fendi logo.

Whatever the look, hijabistas share one style principle: This is not their mother’s head scarf – conservative, plain, a little too formless.

“It looks kind of like a tent,” JoKima Hamidullah says of her mother’s veil. “Like a burqa,” but shorter.

Looks vary by country but blend across borders. Pakistanis, known for draping a scarf (or dupetta) lightly over their hair, are seeing more women envelop their faces Saudi-style. In Egypt and Europe more women are wearing the “Spanish style,” tying their veil like a bandanna, then sweeping its strands into a graceful side ponytail.

In Dubai many locals wrap their signature black hijab (or shayla) around a high bun, giving the air of an elegant updo. Trendy Emiratis simply drape their scarf like a dupetta or lay it over their shoulders. They match their hijab with their abaya, a black robe worn over clothing, or buy the two as a set, the trim on the robe’s sleeves also lining the veil.

Also in vogue are designer scarves, say, a dusty pink Valentino whose wavy layers swirl into a rose: $350 at one boutique here. A more popular Valentino – black lace, $1,000 – has sold out.

Some women prefer a busy look, accessorizing the head scarf with flower pins and headbands. They pile on layers for a wedding cake of color – a blue underscarf (a stretchy cap), then a brown one, then a white chiffon scarf with blue sequins. For holidays some pair festive colors, like orange and black for Halloween. Hala Osman, a development worker in Cairo, mixes and matches one scarf over her hair and another around her neck.

She and others, through their fashion choices, are embracing a broad view of Islam’s mandate for modesty. “I know our rules,” says Ms. Hamidullah. Within them, “the styles are endless.”
